Step-by-Step Umrah Performance Guide

Ensure you perform your spiritual pilgrimage correctly by following the sequence of rites established below:

Step 1: Establishing Purity

Before getting changed into the Ihram garments, take care of your personal hygiene by clipping your nails and removing the hair under your arms and beneath the navel. It is imperative to ensure complete purity by grooming yourself properly and taking care of personal hygiene. This involves basic practices such as grooming your nails, hair removal, and more.

After the first step is complete, you should proceed to take Ghusl. Taking Ghusl before entering into the state of Ihram is a strongly recommended Sunnah. These steps should be carried out before commencing on your journey.

Do not use any perfume or makeup/skincare on the body. Avoid usage of scented products on the body, and refrain from layering on skincare, perfume, and cosmetics.

Step 2: Entering into the State of Ihram

After completing Ghusl, it is now time for you to enter into the state of Ihram. Review the attire guidelines below:

Ihram for Men:

The Ihram for men includes 2 long sheets of clean, white cloth. Footwear should be such that it does not conceal your ankle and heel. If you are a man entering into the state of Ihram, wrap 1 sheet of cloth, also known as Rida- around your chest and fold it down so it sits right above your navel. After this is done, hold the other side of the cloth horizontally behind your back and wrap it over your shoulders. The 2nd sheet of cloth, also known as Izar should cover the bottom half area between the navel and feet.

If you're using an Ihram belt, fasten your belt 2 inches below the top of the cloth to prevent it from slipping. While using clips, make sure at least 1 clip is over the outside end of the cloth.

Ihram for Women:

There is no specific Ihram dress code for women. However, women must wear modest clothing as prescribed by Islamic Shariah law, with the only exception being hands and face must be exposed.

Performing Salah Al-Ihram:

It's a sunnah to perform two rak'ahs of salah before entering into the state of Ihram. This prayer can be performed at home, or before entering into the state of Ihram at the airport or in-flight before crossing the Miqat point, without disrupting the prayer in any way, provided you are directly going for Umrah from your place of descent.

However, if you are departing from Madinah, this prayer can be performed at Masjid Nabawi, your hotel, at the designated Miqat point or on the train. It is important to make Niyyah (intention) to pray 2 rak'ahs Nafl of Salat Al Ihram.

It is highly recommended to recite Surah al-Kafirun (Surah 109) in the first rak'ah and Surah al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) in the second rak'ah. Increase supplication during sujood while prostrating yourselves to Allah SWT because our Du'as are more worthy of being answered while they are made in the state of Sujood.

Step 3: Make Niyyah (Intention)

The Niyyah for Umrah must be made upon reaching the Miqat point, or while nearing it. It is most ideal for you to delay making the intention until the last moment, so you aren't restricted by the restrictions and prohibitions for longer than needed. It is recommended (mustahabb) to declare the intention verbally and in your mind.

Following are three examples of intentions that may be uttered in Arabic:

Step 4: Recite the Talbiyah

After making your Niyyah, you have to recite the Talbiyah to validate your Niyyah intention and enter into the state of Ihram. The utterance of the Talbiyah is wajib (mandatory).

Note: You must recite the Talbiyah at least once after making your Niyyah for Umrah. This is Wajib (mandatory) for the Umrah to be considered valid.

While reciting the Talbiyah, it is Sunnah to pause at four points during the dua, marked as below:

After uttering the Talbiyah, you will now be in the state of Ihram. It is recommended to send Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ after reciting the Talbiyah and to make du'a for yourself and others. Continue reciting the Talbiyah for the rest of your journey until you reach one of the doors of Masjid al-Haram prior to performing Tawaf.

After arriving at your accommodation in Makkah, you may want to freshen up or take a rest before making your way to Masjid al-Haram to perform Tawaf al-Umrah. If you decide to shower, ensure you don't use any items prohibited in the state of Ihram, e.g. scented soap or shampoo. It is recommended you present yourself at Masjid al-Haram as soon as possible. When you're ready, decide which of your belongings you want to take with you, bearing in mind you will be in a large crowd, and the mosque has a capacity of 4M.

Step 5: Entering Masjid Al Haram

It is extremely crucial to keep in mind that the Haram is a sacred place and has its own rules and regulations to avoid immoral acts to guard the sanctity of Masjid Al-Haram. Once you have reached the Haram, the following acts are strictly prohibited:

• Engaging in immoral behavior of any kind
• Causing damage/harm to plants, wild animals, or even birds
• Frightening birds
• Carrying sharp objects
• Engaging in any act that could impact the sacredness of Haram

As you reach the limits of the Haram, constantly recite the Talbiyah, do dhikr and send Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ. When you are about to enter the Haram, recite the following dua as per recommendation:

It is a sunnah to enter Masjid al-Haram through the Bab al-Salam (the Gate of Peace). Note that this is not always possible since there is tight security and the authorities have designated entrances for pilgrims performing Umrah, and you will likely enter the mosque through these entrances. Keep in mind that you must enter leading with your right foot and recite the du'a for entering the mosque.

Once you have entered the mosque, if you have the intention to do the Tawaf as soon as you enter, you can skip the Sunnah prayer for greeting the mosque, also known as Tahiyat al-masjid, since Tawaf al Tahiyat is carried out upon entering Masjid-al Haram and serves the same purpose as the sunnah prayer Tahiyat al-Masjid. However, if you intend to perform Tawaf later, you may perform the Tahiyat al-masjid.

Keep in mind that once you enter Masjid Al-Haram, you will witness large crowds performing Salah, it is permissible to walk in front of them, however, avoid interrupting those that are in prostration.

Step 6: Witnessing the first sight of the Ka’bah

Upon entering the mosque, keep your eyes lowered until you arrive at the mataf. The mataf is the open space designated for Tawaf. Once you have arrived at the Mataf, lift your head with deep humility to witness the sacred sight of the Holy Ka’bah.

Step 7: Tawaf

Pre-requisites for Tawaf:

1. Perform Tawaf yourself with the intention made, ensuring you are in Masjid al-Haram.
2. Be in a state of Wudhu, free from conditions requiring ghusl, and ensure proper awrah coverage.
3. Begin Tawaf from Hajar al-Aswad, moving in an anti-clockwise direction, and avoid the Hatim area.
4. Complete seven circuits on foot, if able.
5. Conclude Tawaf with two rak'ahs of salah.

You have to be in Wudhu during your Tawaf. If you're a male, while performing Tawaf, uncover your right shoulder by passing the top sheet of your Ihram under your right armpit covering the left shoulder and exposing the right shoulder, this is also known as Idtiba.

Step 8: Starting Point

Align yourself with the corner of the Ka’bah where the Hajar al-Aswad is located. To identify this corner, keep in mind that this specific corner faces only 1 minaret while the other 3 corners face 2 minarets each. You will notice a green light opposite the Ka’bah, this light indicates the starting point of each circuit. Make your Niyyah to perform Tawaf for Allah SWT, for this the following dua can be made:

O Allah, I intend to perform the Tawaf of Umrah of the Ka’bah for your sake and your sake alone. Please accept it from me and make it easy for me.

You may make the following intention, which is in Arabic:

Now, start the first circuit of your Tawaf, ensuring the Ka’bah is on your left side. You have to proceed in an anti-clockwise direction, keep in mind that there sometimes may be a very big crowd to do the Tawaf, it has a large capacity as well, keep your family close, ensure your safety and proceed with your Tawaf.

Step 9: Performing Raml

In the first three circuits, men should perform Raml, which is the practice of walking briskly, lifting the legs forcefully and sticking out the chest. However, if there is congestion, which is likely to be the case if you're closer to the Ka'bah, only perform this sunnah if you're sure you won't harm or inconvenience others. During peak times, you're unlikely to be able to perform this action.

Keep reciting all your prayers and supplications during your Tawaf. Du'as are said to be accepted during the act of Tawaf, so it is crucial to make all the du'as with utmost sincerity and devotion.

Step 10: Rukn al-Yamani

Upon reaching the Yemeni Corner, also known as Rukn al-Yamani, the corner preceding the Hajar al-Aswad, if you manage to get close enough, touch it with your right hand or both hands and say "Allāhu akbar (اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ)". If it's very crowded, proceed without saying Takbir or gesturing towards it.

It is a sunnah to recite the following du'a between the Rukn al-Yamani and the Hajar al-Aswad:

Returning to Hajar al-Aswad marks the completion of one circuit. Begin the second circuit by doing Istilam of Hajar al-Aswad as previously described and saying "Allāhu akbar (اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ)". You should say Allāhu akbar while doing Istilam in all subsequent circuits. You will be performing Istilam eight times in total during the Tawaf, one before the start of the Tawaf and one at the end of each of the seven circuits.

Continuous Completion: Complete Tawaf continuously without interruption between circuits. However, if congregational prayer begins, join the prayer and then resume Tawaf from where you paused. There is no need to repeat the circuit. If Wudhu breaks during prayer or Tawaf, it is correct to repeat both.

Completing the Seven Circuits: Continue until all seven circuits are completed. Performing Istilam at the start and end of Tawaf is a strongly emphasized sunnah.

Salah: After finishing Tawaf, perform two rak'ahs of salah, ideally with Maqam Ibrahim between you and the Ka'bah. However, since Maqam Ibrahim is within the mataf, it often causes congestion. If you cannot pray there due to the crowd, you may perform the prayer anywhere in Masjid al-Haram. It is sunnah to recite Surah al-Kafirun (Surah 109) in the first rak'ah and Surah al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) in the second, following Surah al-Fatiha. After completing the prayer, make abundant du'a.

Zamzam: After salah and du'a, drink your fill of Zamzam water. It is available near the Tawaf area and from various fountains and dispensers throughout Masjid al-Haram. The entrance to original Zamzam well has been covered to allow more space for Tawaf. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk." Before drinking, make an intention that its consumption fulfills your wishes, whether it is for good health, success in this world, or protection from the trials of the grave. It is recommended (Mustahhab) to stand and face the Ka'bah while drinking Zamzam water.

Sa'i: It is a sunnah to perform Sa'i immediately after Tawaf, although you may take a break if necessary. If you feel tired after Tawaf or your feet are aching, you may rest until you feel ready. Remember, you will cover over three kilometres during Sa'i, so ensure you have sufficient energy to complete the rite before starting.

Prerequisites for Sa’i:

For Sa’i to be considered valid, the following five conditions must be met:

1. You must enter into Ihram before performing Sa’i and remain in Ihram until the Sa’i is completed.
2. Sa’i must be performed after completing Tawaf.
3. You must begin Sa’i at Safa and end at Marwa, covering the full distance between them on foot unless you have a valid excuse. A total of seven laps must be completed.
4. Sa’i must be performed personally by the individual, without delegation to another.
5. Sa’i must be carried out at the prescribed time, after Tawaf, to ensure its validity.

Steps for Performing Sa’i:

1. Begin at Safa: Proceed to the hill of Safa, this hill is located within Masjid al-Haram, aligned with the Hajar al-Aswad. There are signs within the Masjid that will guide you to its location. As you approach Safa, recite the following du’a, as it is a Sunnah:

This du'a should be recited only once before starting Sa'i, and not at the beginning of each lap.

2. Supplication at Safa: Upon reaching Mount Safa, face the Ka’bah and raise your hands in supplication, without raising them as high as your earlobes or gesturing towards the Ka’bah as done during Tawaf. Recite the Takbir (Allāhu akbar), Tahlil (lā ilāha illa Llāh), and send Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ. It is sunnah to recite the following du’a three times:

While reciting the du’a three times, add your own supplications in between, according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

3. Journey to Marwa: From Safa, make your way towards Marwa. Between Safa and Marwa, you will encounter two sets of green, fluorescent lights approximately 50 metres apart, which indicate the distance that Hajar ran in order to get to higher ground. These two sets of lights are known as Milayn al-Akhdharayn (the Two Green Mileposts). Between these two lights, it is a Sunnah for men to run at a medium pace while women should continue normally. There are no fixed dhikr or du’a for Sa’i, so you may recite any supplications of your choice.

4. Supplication at Marwa: Upon reaching Marwa, face the Ka’bah, raise your hands in supplication, and repeat the same du’a that you recited at Safa. This completes one lap of Sa’i. Returning to Safa marks the start of the second lap. Continue this process until you have completed seven laps, ending at Marwa.

5. Completion and Exit: After completing the seven laps, it is recommended to offer a final du’a and perform two rak’ahs of Nafl Salah in Masjid al-Haram. As you exit Masjid al-Haram, step out with your left foot. It is Sunnah to recite the following dua while exiting the Masjid:

Lastly, to complete Umrah, you must shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) your hair. Men are encouraged to shave their heads, while women should trim about an inch from the ends of their hair. It is more virtuous for a man to have his head shaved completely. Licensed barbershops in Makkah are available 24 hours a day, except during the time of Salah, or you may perform the Halq or Taqsir yourself to come out of the state of Ihram.
